Square Face Shape

Those three placeholders are the square targets. A ratio still counts as a match at up to 0.30 away on the length target, and up to 0.12 away on each of the two width targets.

These five numbers are the row Square in face-shape-ratios.csv, published on the data page under CC BY 4.0 and archived with a DOI. Nothing here comes from an outside standard: it is what this site compares a face against, put in a downloadable file so it can be checked.

Reading the square row

The four distances are forehead width at the temples, cheekbone width at the widest point, jaw width corner to corner, and face length from hairline to chin. Length is fixed at 100, so the other three arrive as percentages of it — proportions inside one photograph, not millimetres. The landmark indices each distance uses are listed in face-shape-measurements.csv.

What defines the square row is the pair of width ratios: 0.97 at the forehead and 0.95 at the jaw, almost level with the cheekbones at both ends, packed into a short overall length of 1.22.

Taking the measurements yourself

Tape flat on the skin, standing square to a mirror, arm's length back. Where the photo and the typed numbers go

One page of JavaScript and a model file: the model arrives once with the page, then the measuring runs in your browser tab, so the photo is never uploaded anywhere and no server of ours sees it. The box at the top of this page is the same story — the three ratios are compared inside the page and go nowhere.

Four rows again from the same published file. The file makes one thing easy to see about this shape: square is the only row of the seven where both width ratios sit at 0.95 or above — forehead 0.97 and jaw 0.95 — which is why the jaw corners, not the cheekbones, are what people point at when they describe it. With 0.12 of room on those two ratios, a face can drift towards the round row without ever leaving square territory.

Which is wider on a square face shape, the jaw or the forehead?

Almost the same. This site's square row has the forehead at 0.97 and the jaw at 0.95 of the cheekbone width, so the forehead is a shade wider — the near-match between the two ends is the point.

Is a square face shape the same as a rectangular one?

There is no rectangle row in this data. A face that reads square but clearly longer than the 1.22 length target drifts towards the oblong row at 1.75, which is where the longer version of the same shape lives here.

Why is my jaw angle easier to see than my cheekbones?

Because in this data the jaw sits at 0.95 of the cheekbone width on a square face — the two widths are nearly level, so the corner where the jaw turns is a firmer edge than on rows like heart (0.70) or diamond (0.72).
