Face Shape Detector

Upload a photo and get your face shape, four measurements and styling suggestions. Everything is computed in this browser tab — your photo is never uploaded anywhere.

Drop a photo here, or use one of the buttons below

JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC. One face, straight on. The photo is processed on this device.

The first photo downloads the 5.5 MB landmark model once per browser; after that it is cached.

No photo handy? Measure the three ratios by hand instead.

How this face shape detector measures your face

This page uses MediaPipe Face Mesh, a face landmark model that runs locally in the browser. It returns 468 landmark points on a detected face. Four distances between those points produce the numbers you see:

MeasurementLandmarks used
Forehead width127 → 356 (temple to temple)
Cheekbone width234 → 454 (widest point of the face)
Jaw width172 → 397 (jaw corner to jaw corner)
Face length10 → 152 (top of forehead to bottom of chin)

All four are shown as a percentage of face length, which is set to 100. They are relative proportions of your own photo, not absolute measurements in millimetres or inches — a photo has no scale reference, so no tool can give you real-world millimetres from a photo alone.

Three ratios then decide the shape:

Each of the seven shapes has a target profile for those three ratios. The tool scores your three ratios against all seven profiles and shows the closest one, plus the runner-up. The thresholds below are this tool's own heuristic definition of the standard geometric descriptions of the seven shapes. They are not derived from a published study, and the match score is a closeness measure, not a validated accuracy figure.

Shapelength ÷ widthforehead ÷ cheekjaw ÷ cheek
Oval1.450.860.76
Round1.180.900.86
Square1.220.970.95
Heart1.421.000.70
Diamond1.500.740.72
Oblong1.750.880.84
Triangle1.320.801.02

When scoring, a ratio is allowed to sit up to ±0.30 (length ÷ width) or ±0.12 (the two width ratios) away from a profile before that profile stops looking like a match. All distances are measured in the pixels of your photo, so the result does not depend on whether the photo happens to be square, portrait or landscape.

The evidence for that is in the page itself: the model is MediaPipe Face Mesh, it returns 468 landmark points, and it is a local file served from this folder. It is about 5.5 MB in total and downloads once, the first time you pick a photo; after that the detector makes no further network requests of its own, which is why a photo never leaves the tab.

The ratio profiles and the tolerances the tool scores against are published as plain CSV files with a DOI, so the numbers above can be checked or cited: the data page lists every file and the exact wording to quote.

Working it out by hand instead

If you would rather measure yourself with a soft tape than trust a photo, the tape-measure walkthrough covers the three checks that actually matter, why the charts disagree with each other, and a sheet you can print and fill in.

The numbers behind this page are published separately: the ratio profiles, landmark measurements and printable worksheet are downloadable as plain files.

Looking for proportions instead of a shape? The golden ratio face check reads five facial ratios from one photo and shows how far each one sits from its target.

FAQ

Is this face shape detector free?

Yes. There is no charge, no account and no upgrade tier, and there is no daily limit or cap on how many photos you use — nothing counts your uses.

Do I need an app for face shape recognition?

No. This is a browser page, so it works anywhere you can open a web page, including phones. Nothing needs to be installed.

Is it an AI face shape detector?

It uses a machine-learning landmark model, yes. The model file downloads once with the page and then runs on your own device — no per-photo request is sent anywhere.

How is this different from a face type detector quiz?

A quiz asks you questions and relies on your own judgement. This page measures distances between landmark points on your actual photo, shows you those points, and reports the ratios it used.

Can I use it on a photo with more than one face?

It is built for one face. If several faces are in frame, only the first detected face is measured.

Why can I not open my HEIC photo?

HEIC decoding is up to the browser, not this page. Chrome and Firefox cannot decode HEIC at all. Convert the file to JPG or PNG, or open this page in Safari.

Does it work offline?

After the page and the model file have loaded once, the detector itself needs no further network calls.
